Despite denials from the Marco Rubio campaign and from Rubio himself, his donors are urging him to drop out of the presidential race before Florida's vote on Tuesday, Fox Business News' Charles Gasparino said.
"People have called him, told him to drop out. These are major donors," Gasparino said Thursday on
Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto." "They told him that handing this over to [front-runner Donald] Trump is the equivalent of Chris Christie hugging, hugging, Barack Obama in 2012."
Gasparino first reported that donors are
urging Rubio to get out Wednesday, and said Rubio seemed receptive to what they told him. Gasparino said Rubio will likely see if he sees significant improvement in his poll numbers following Thursday's CNN debate in Miami.
Rubio is currently running second to Trump by at least 20 points in Florida.
"His donors are telling him, point blank, 'Get out, save yourself, unite the party behind one and save it from Donald Trump,'" Gasparino said Thursday.
Rubio told Fox News' Megyn Kelly on Friday he has had no such discussions and his campaign spokesman Alex Conant has called Fox's report "100 percent false."
"People have called him, they have told him, he has listened," Gasparino countered on Thursday. "If he doesn't think that's a discussion, that's a whole other story. I'm not a lawyer. I'm just telling you."
