Nancy Reagan was protective of Ronald Reagan's legacy from the time he was elected president until she died Sunday at age 94, former White House Chief of Staff James Baker told Fox News Channel.
While the first lady did not get involved with minute policy matters, she helped choose personnel, and, along with Deputy Chief of Staff Michael Deaver, brought in Baker himself because of his knowledge of Washington.
"She didn't have policy views that she held viscerally," Baker said. "If it was good, if she thought it was good for the president politically, that's what she would be for. If she thought it was good for his legacy, that's what she would be for."
After Reagan left office, she became a protector of his legacy, Baker said.
"And she's done a reasonably credible job, if you look at what history has written about his two terms as president," he said.
