Former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Thursday because "it's more important than ever that our next president provide strong leadership in the world."
"We live in a very dangerous time," Lieberman, 74, the independent who was Al Gore's vice presidential running mate in 2000. He told Fox News in August that he would vote for Clinton.
Lieberman said that the next occupant of the White House must show strength in "standing up against our enemies and with our allies, including Israel.
"We need steadfast experience and reliable leadership in Washington," he said.
The Clinton endorsement is "not about partisanship," Lieberman said. "I have supported Republicans and Democrats in the past.
"This is about what is best for America."
He added that he had "great personal confidence" in Clinton and that he had served eight years with the former secretary of state in the Senate.
Clinton has a "strong, consistent pro-Israel record," Lieberman said, adding that "she always reached across party lines to get things done for our country — which is what we need right now in the White House."
The former senator stumped for Clinton last week in South Florida, according to news reports.
