Donald Trump must accept the outcome of the upcoming election regardless of the winner, Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said Thursday.
"The voters are going to decide this election, and Donald Trump needs to accept the outcome. If there are reports that need to be investigated, they will be, as I used to do as attorney general," Ayotte told New Hampshire 1.
On Wednesday, Trump refused to pledge to accept the results of the election, and on Thursday, he said he would accept the results, but only if he wins.
"I have faith in the electoral process, and the election process, not just in New Hampshire, which I think is run very effectively and efficiently by our secretary of state. But I have, very much, support and faith in the process nationally," said Republican Rep. Frank Guinta, who was also interviewed by New Hampshire 1.
"I anticipate that the election results will be accepted regardless of who wins, and accepted by the candidates and by the American people," he added.
Ayotte's Democratic opponent, Gov. Maggie Hassan, accused Ayotte of only opposing Trump when it's politically convenient to do so.
"Last night, Donald Trump threatened to undermine the very core of our democracy by saying he may not accept the outcome of this election, and instead of outright condemning his actions, Senator Ayotte continued to enable Trump by offering a statement that again tries to play both sides for her own political benefit.
"Despite her political maneuvering intended only to save her own re-election, Senator Ayotte must take responsibility for the fact that she has legitimized Trump's campaign by for months supporting him for president," she said in a statement.
