Melania Trump's immigration history came into question due to nude photos published by the New York Post in early 1997, according to Politico, which obtained an original copy of the issue in question.
The Post reported in August that the photos came from a New York photo shoot in 1995 for the January 1996 issue of Max Magazine, which is now defunct. Melania and her husband Donald Trump maintain that she came to the United States in 1996, and the report appeared to call that into question.
On Friday Politico reported that they had obtained a copy of the issue Melania Trump appeared in: issue #88 from February 1997. According to Politico, both the New York Post and former Max Magazine editor-in-chief Marc Dolisi, who told The Washington Post that the photos appeared in the February 1996 issue, admit that they were mistaken.
Photographer "Alé de Basseville told the Post on Wednesday that he misspoke, and the photo session actually took place in 1996 in Manhattan, and appeared in a 1997 issue of the magazine," a spokeswoman for the paper said.
De Basseville denied that he was the source of the error, claiming to Politico that he told the Post that he could not remember when the photo shoot took place.
"Because Mrs. Trump did not enter the United States until August 27, 1996, the allegation that she participated in a photo shoot in 1995 is not only untrue, it is impossible," said Michael Wildes, a lawyer who wrote a letter on behalf of Melania Trump after reviewing her immigration history.
