GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has placed a short petition on his campaign website asking for Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis to be freed from jail.

Huckabee plans a Tuesday afternoon rally in support of Davis, who has been in jail on contempt of court charges since Thursday. Davis, clerk for Rowan County, refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it goes against her Christian beliefs.

The petition is addressed to President Barack Obama, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning, who placed Davis in jail.

The petition reads: "Immediately release Kim Davis from federal custody. Exercising Religious Liberty should never be a crime in America. This is a direct attack on our God-given, constitutional rights."
