The publisher of New Hampshire's largest newspaper said Wednesday that Republican front-runner Donald Trump has "overturned the table" and created an "extraordinary" primary race in the Granite State.

"It's extraordinary, because of the Trump factor and the other candidates trying to vie against Trump," Joe McQuaid, publisher of The Union Leader in Manchester, told NPR. "Trump has overturned the table."

He has worked at the newspaper for a half-century. The state holds its primary on Tuesday.

The Union Leader endorsed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for the GOP nomination in November and has attacked Trump as a "bully," NPR reports.

Trump has responded by bashing McQuaid as a "lowlife" and has called the Union Leader "a dishonest newspaper."

McQuaid told NPR that he hoped to be "pleasantly surprised" and see another contender finish "second to Trump" on Tuesday.

Besides Christie, he's hoping for Ohio Gov. John Kasich or former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

"One of those guys," McQuaid said, "I hope, will finish strong enough to carry the fight on, and beat Trump down South."
