JetBlue, the Queens, New York-based airline, is offering to fly police officers for free to attend Saturday's funeral of NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos, who was killed while on duty along with Officer Wenjian Liu last weekend.
Two officers from each police department across the nation will be given the free seats on flights to New York City, JetBlue spokeswoman Sharon Jones told the
New York Daily News. The offer will depend on seat availability, as this weekend's flights will also experience heavy holiday travel.
The carrier is also offering flights at no charge to the families of the murdered officers, reports
CBS News.
"We're honored to do what we can to support the communities we serve, and our team has made flights available to law enforcement agencies across our route network who wish to send representatives to New York to support their brethren," the carrier said in a statement Wednesday.
Ramos' funeral is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale, Queens, with Vice President Joe Biden expected to attend. A wake service is planned Friday for the slain officer. The services are expected to bring in several thousand law enforcement officials from throughout the country.
Ramos and Liu were shot, execution-style, while sitting in a patrol car in Brooklyn on Saturday. The man who shot them, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, killed himself in a nearby subway station as police were pursuing him.
The airline is also offering to fly Liu's relatives from China, using a partnering airline, for free, reports the Daily News. His funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
The low-cost airline company has stops at several locations in the United States, except for in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, but plans to coordinate the flights with other airlines.
Law enforcement agencies can book flights for their officers by calling 1-800-JETBLUE.
