Pence Tells Donors He's Staying with Trump

Mike Pence has told Republican donors that he is fully committed to remaining the running-mate of Donald Trump on the GOP presidential ticket, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Marty Obst, director of Trump-Pence vice presidential operations, told the newspaper that speculation the Indiana governor would abandon Trump following the release of an 11-year-old videotape of the real estate mogul making lewd statements about women is “categorically false.”

Appearing at a Saturday fundraiser in Providence, Rhode Island, Pence “spoke enthusiastically about Mr. Trump, his pro-growth economic policies and the movement he’s begun,” Obst said.

The aide said none of the donors at the event canceled following the release of the video, adding that “Several guests remarked that they didn’t want to get caught up trying to dissect every statement by Mr. Trump. They were focused instead on his message and his positions.”

There were doubts about Pence’s stance after it was first reported that, following the release of the video, the Indiana governor would replace Trump at a campaign event with House Speaker Paul Ryan and then that Pence also withdrew from the appearance, The Indianapolis Star reported.

Speculation was enhanced when Pence also released a statement before going to the Providence event that refused to either defend or condone Trump’s statements on the video.

However, despite the abandonment of Trump by numerous Republican figures and pressure from conservatives on Pence, the vice presidential candidate later released a full campaign schedule for next week.
