Texas Sen. John Cornyn is a true contender to replace recently ousted FBI Director James Comey, but his nomination would cause a major shakeup in Washington at a questionable time, Politico reports.

Cornyn is set to meet with Attorney General Jeff Sessions this week about the position, and is seriously considering taking it if offered, sources told Politico. If confirmed, his role as Senate Majority Whip would be up for grabs.

But the Republican party’s aim now is to get the GOP healthcare bill passed and Cornyn’s absence could be detrimental as the senator has been in nearly every meeting regarding replacing Obamacare. He also serves as the Senate GOP's spokesperson on the legislation. A new whip would also mean an adjustment for the Senate Republican Conference.

Cornyn would likely face significant resistance from Democrats if nominated. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Sen. Chuck Schumer last week said the Senate should not move ahead on a vote for a new FBI director until a special projector is appointed to lead an investigation into President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia during the presidential campaign.
