House Speaker Paul Ryan made a veiled reference to Donald Trump on Tuesday as he demanded that any candidate who expects to be this year’s Republican presidential nominee must denounce racism.
“If a person wants to be the nominee of the Republican Party, there can be no evasion and no games,” Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, said at a press conference,
The Washington Times reports..
They must reject any group or cause that is built on bigotry. This party does not prey on people’s prejudice.”
He warned the potential nominee that the party upholds American values that everyone is equal.
"This is the kind of moment where we should be having a serious debate about the policies needed to restore the American idea," Ryan told reporters on Super Tuesday. "Instead, the conversation over the last few days has been over white supremacy groups."
Earlier this week, Trump failed to denounce former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, a white supremacist who endorsed the billionaire developer and GOP presidential frontrunner. He later blamed his response on a malfunctioning ear piece, that he didn't understand what was being asked and that he has in past years denounced Duke.
Trump is expected to scoop up a majority of delegates in the Super Tuesday primaries.
