Fox News anchor Shepard Smith said the staff at Fox News has Megyn Kelly's back in regards to her public spat with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and he said the real estate mogul will "have to answer" for his comments.

Smith, who anchors an afternoon news show on the network, appeared on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers" Monday and told Meyers he tries to steer clear of Trump to avoid any public confrontations with him.

"I try to go the other way," Smith said. "I had an interaction with him once before, and then he tore me apart. I believe it was on Rush Limbaugh for a while. So I figured we'll just let Megyn Kelly have him. She's doing a fine job."

Story continues below video.

During the Republican debate nearly two weeks ago, Trump took issue with Kelly's line of questioning. He later said, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever."

Smith said the problem was with Trump's refusal to answer the question, not Kelly's question itself.

"I know why we're part of the story; because Megyn asked a relevant question that the candidate didn't want to answer," Smith said. "She said, 'Why have you said these things about women, what did you mean when you said these things?' He didn't really have an answer for that. At some point, he's gonna have to have an answer for that."

"Just as all the candidates have to be held accountable for all that they've done to this point, it's part of the process. And that he turned it on her while running from the question was telling for me, and I hope that in the next debate, whoever's doing it will ask him some of those questions."

The next Republican presidential debate is scheduled for Sept. 16 on CNN.

Smith was asked if the employees of Fox News were offering to help Kelly, who went on vacation last week in the middle of her spat with Trump.

"Ms. Megyn does not need our help. We're all in 100 percent support of her, of course," Smith said. "All she did was ask timely, good questions, and I think our colleagues over here at NBC have been saying the same thing about her. She's on a much-deserved vacation that had nothing to do with him."
