Donald Trump has a fairly comfortable path to Iowa's six electoral votes — a state President Barack Obama has carried in the past two elections. Trump leads Hillary Clinton by 7 points in the latest The Des Moines Register poll released Sunday.

"The bigger surprise on election night would be if he lost Iowa, not that he won it," Amy Walter, national editor at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, told The Register.

"Donald Trump can’t afford to lose Iowa, and Hillary Clinton can. There are multiple paths for Hillary Clinton to get to 270 electoral votes, and many of us who are watching the map have expected that Iowa may not be part of that calculus for her."

The complete poll results from 800 likely voters polled Nov. 1-4 (+/- 3.5-point margin of error):

  • Republican Trump 46 percent.
  • Democrat Clinton 39 percent.
  • Libertarian Gary Johnson 6 percent.
  • Don't want to tell 5 percent.
  • Other/would not vote 2 percent.
  • Green Party's Jill Stein 1 percent.
  • Not sure/don't remember 1 percent.

Trump's lead is backed by men, independents, young and middle-aged voters and those without a college degree, The Register reported.
