USDA Closes Website

By    |   Thursday, 03 October 2013 04:36 PM EDT

The Agriculture Department (USDA) has essentially shut down its website in the government shutdown.

Anyone who visits usda.gov gest sent to page with the message: "Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available. After funding has been restored, please allow some time for this website to become available again."

The shutoff appears to represent an attempt to make users feel the full force of the government shutdown, The Hill reports. Visitors to the site can't even access information placed there in the past.

The Hill notes that other government agencies haven't gone this far. They have messages letting users know that the sites won't be updated, but users can still find old information.

For example, the Energy Department's site reads, "Due to the current lapse of federal funding, the Department of Energy's website is accessible, but may not be updated until Congress approves funds for Fiscal Year 2014."

The Departments of Commerce, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and Labor also allow users access to old information, The Hill reports. And the State Department is still updating its web site.
