How To Take Care of Artificial Eyes

Wednesday, 30 April 2014 09:26 PM EDT

An artificial or prosthetic eye is also known as an ocular prosthesis that completes the void of a missing eye. This artificial eye needs to be worn full time. The prosthetic or the artificial eye is fitted under the eyelid, over the orbital implant. This artificial eye is made up of medical-grade plastic acrylic and takes the shape of a convex shell. An ocular prosthesis is just a dummy eye since it provides no vision. For vision, visual prosthesis is used. It is important to take good care of the artificial eye.

How to Take Care of a Prosthetic Eye

Patients, who have recently had their artificial eyes fixed, often wonder how they can best take care of their eyes. They need not fret since taking care of prosthetic eye becomes better with time. With practice, the eye can even be removed and replaced. A prosthetic eye is fitted to the inner eye socket and is held together by the upper and lower eyelid. While many patients wear their artificial eye all the time, some remove it occasionally to clean it and to take complete care.

To take care of a prosthetic eye, you must touch them only with clean hands. If you wish to take optimum care of your prosthetic eye, then you should clean it once in every two or three weeks. You should remove the artificial eye only when suggested by the ocularist. Before you remove your prosthetic eye, ensure that you do not drop it, since it can be damaged by dropping. You should ensure that you do not place your eye in a tissue since it can get discarded.

How Much Does a Prosthetic Eye Cost?

The cost of an artificial eye can greatly vary depending on the geography and the clinic that you opt for. Usually the cost will depend upon the time taken to develop the artificial eye. The difference arises because some doctors design the iris themselves whereas others use digital techniques. If digital technology is used, then the cost is comparatively lower and the quality is better. Patients must take care of the prosthetic eye.

Another factor that greatly influences the cost of an artificial eye is the condition of the existing eye. Since the doctors need to operate on the existing eye, it plays a huge role in determining the cost. The best mode of treatment can cost up to thousands of dollars. There are some doctors who take shortcuts to cut costs. This type of cost-cutting is not in the best interest of the patient. If you are spending so much, ensure that you take care of the eye.
