California Braces for Trump's Illegal Immigration Crackdown

By    |   Thursday, 23 January 2025 05:40 PM EST

California Democrats and advocate groups continue to mobilize against the impending crackdown on illegal immigration — including mass deportations — by the Trump administration, holding workshops, providing legal advice, and establishing a rapid response hotline, Newsweek reported Thursday.

President Donald Trump and new border czar Tom Homan began mass deportations on day one, starting with known violent offenders in the country illegally. But that dragnet will eventually widen to include all illegal immigrants.

"We are mobilizing to defend immigrant communities against Trump's anti-immigrant agenda and are more prepared than we were for his first administration," Gina Amato Lough, the directing attorney at Public Counsel's Immigrants' Rights Project, told Newsweek. "This time, there's a strong and coordinated effort to protect immigrants from unjust policies on day one."

Meanwhile, California Democrat lawmakers are acting on a $50 million bill to buttress the state's Department of Justice as well as legal aid and services for illegal immigrants. State Attorney General Rob Bonta provided guidance to police departments outlining the prohibition of state and local resources to assist the Trump administration with deportations, Politico reported.

Trump on his first day signed a bevy of immigration executive orders. He ended the "catch and release" policy of the Biden administration, which instructed Border Patrol to release illegals into the country while they waited years for a court date. Trump on day one also disabled the CBP One app, ending the scheduling of appointments for asylum seekers at the border.

Trump declared a national emergency at the border, allowing for the mobilization of the military and other resources to bolster security. He reinstated "Remain in Mexico," action that forces asylum seekers to wait for their hearings in Mexico.

The Trump administration handed down new guidance to the Border Patrol that puts an end to the use of court dates for illegal border crossers, reverting to the president's previous policy of pursuit and force.

In preparation for what's coming, the California Immigrant Defenders Law Center launched a hotline to assist illegals.

"The Trump administration's barrage of executive orders is meant to instill fear and sow chaos. When leadership fails us, we must build community power. ImmDef has created this hotline to stand with Southern California's immigrant residents because no immigrant should stand alone in the face of an anti-immigrant federal administration," Laura Urias, the law center's program director, told Newsweek in a statement.
