Former President Bill Clinton says that the claims made by Peter Schweizer in his book "Clinton Cash" about donations given to the Clinton Foundation lack evidence.
"There's just no evidence,"
Clinton told CNN. "Even the guy that wrote the book apparently had to admit under questioning that 'we didn't have a shred of evidence for this, we just sort of thought we would throw it out there and see if it flies,' and it won't fly."
Schweizer said while appearing on ABC's "This Week" that he didn't have "direct evidence," but that the "pattern of behavior" was
enough to merit more investigation into the matter, citing similar allegations made about former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, who both ended up being indicted.
The "Clinton Cash" author links donations made to the Clinton Foundation while former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's was at the State Department, suggesting that the donations were made in exchange for favors.
Mr. Clinton told CNN that the Clinton Foundation "had a policy when she was secretary of state that we would only continue accepting money from people who were already giving us money, and I've tried to re-create that policy as nearly as I can now during the campaign."
The former president added that while most health and development work is done by governments around the world, he believes the Clinton Foundation receives funding for such work "because they think we're good at solving problems."
