Georgia's senate and gubernatorial races are in a dead heat, and candidates could face runoffs if their heated attacks don't result in them attracting more than 50 percent of the vote.
According to a new Landmark Communications poll, Republican David Perdue and Democrat Michelle Nunn are tied at 46 percent each in their Senate contest, reports
WSB-TV in Atlanta.
Overall polls put Purdue ahead by 2.7 percentage points, according to
RealClearPolitics.
The Landmark poll also puts Republican incumbent Gov. Nathan Deal and Democratic challenger Jason Carter at a tie, with 45 percent each, the television station reported. Overall, RealClearPolitics reports
Deal is ahead by 3.2 percentage points. Libertarian candidate Andrew Hunt pulled in 5 percent of the 1,000 likely Georgia voters polled.
There are several such tight races nationwide, reports
USA Today, and runoffs and independent candidates could mean the battle to control the U.S. Senate may not be over on Election Day.
"Any one of [these variables] could delay the outcome of the Senate for days, weeks, months maybe," said Kyle Kondik, with the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
Republicans need just six seats to regain control of the Senate, and are expected to capture Democratic seats in Montana, South Dakota, and West Virginia. However, there are 10 other very close competitive races, and polls in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, and Kansas show the margins between the two candidates are between just 1 and 3 percentage points.
In addition to Georgia, Louisiana's race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu and Republican challenger Bill Cassidy is expected to end in a runoff, and both are already buying ad space for post-Election Day spots, USA Today reports.
