Sen. David Vitter: Airstrikes Against ISIS 'Largely Window Dressing'

American-led airstrikes against the Islamic State (ISIS) in portions of Iraq and Syria aren't working and are "largely window dressing," Louisiana Sen. David Vitter said on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures."

"I don't think we have a comprehensive approach, a comprehensive strategy," Vitter said, adding that he wants to see Congress pass a new resolution authorizing the use of force against the terrorist group.

President Barack Obama has been relying on the Authorization for Use of Military Force signed into law days after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Vitter said he wants to see a new resolution passed partly on constitutional grounds, because the airstrikes involve Syrian territory, and that country has not previously been a player in the war on terror.

Secondly, he wants the new resolution in order to engage Congress and the public to have a full discussion and debate before further action is taken.

Obama, Vitter said, is unlikely to consider American ground troops even after the November 4 midterm elections.

"I don't think he's ever going to get to American boots on the ground leading the way," Vitter said. The senator said he doesn't necessarily want American ground troops leading the mission, but wants our Mideast allies to be encouraged to lead that effort.
