Vice President Joe Biden appears to be taking a closer step at running for the White House, reportedly using his vacation in South Carolina to discuss the matter with his family and friends.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Biden is in Kiawah Island this week and is asking for advice as he decides on whether to run.
"He's taking input from a lot of people he cares about and respects," South Carolina legislator and Biden supporter James Smith said, reports the Journal.
Smith wants Biden to run for president.
"He knows where I stand. It's just got to be his decision," Smith said.
Biden has said he will announce his decision on running in September.
Neither Biden nor his aides have hinted at whether he will run for president, but there has been plenty of support building for him behind the scenes.
Biden's son, Beau, died at the age of 46 in May after a battle with brain cancer, and
it's been reported that one of his final wishes was for Joe Biden to run for president one last time after coming up short in 1988 and 2008.
Hillary Clinton leads the small field of Democrats vying for the coveted job in the Oval Office, although the ongoing email scandal she's embroiled in is threatening to knock her campaign off the rails. Behind her is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has made up some ground.
Biden,
according to Real Clear Politics, is behind Sanders in national polls.
"There are Democrats who are concerned about the turmoil swirling around the secretary with the emails and the server, and now the FBI is investigating and congressional hearings are coming up in the fall," Steve Shurtleff, the top Democrat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, told the Journal.
John Sununu, a former New Hampshire governor who served as the chief of staff to President H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV this month he believes Democrats are ready to support Biden as Clinton's stock plummets.
"She is in big trouble. The [poll] numbers are horrible. The direction of the numbers continue to go down,"
Sununu said.
"She has not created any semblance of a coherent message. She is desperately buying $1 million or $2 million worth of ads in Iowa and in New Hampshire … So the Democratic Party is looking around and Joe Biden is probably the most likely alternative horse."
