John Bolton: Yemen Crisis Will Take Resources from ISIS Fight

By    |   Wednesday, 11 February 2015 08:15 PM EST

As President Barack Obama asks Congress for a new authorization to use military force against the Islamic State (ISIS), America's Arab allies may be having to pull back from the fight, says former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.

Saudi Arabia borders Iraq, where ISIS has a stronghold, on the north and Yemen on the south, where militants have taken control, forcing American and other Western embassies to evacuate.

The crisis now on its southern border will move some of the Saudis efforts to confront the situation in Yemen, Bolton said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

The other countries on the Arabian Peninsula also will be affected, he said.

"This is a serious threat to the continued existence of all the monarchies," Bolton said.

Bolton said the quick retreat is bad for American influence in the area.

"This looks like what they call an evacuation under nonpermissive circumstances, meaning they had to get out ahead of the bad guys," Bolton said. "And I think that reflects a lack of appreciation of how bad the situation had gotten."
