Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is being compared to dimwitted TV Marine Gomer Pyle for suggesting the mayors of so-called "sanctuary cities" should be thrown in jail for harboring illegal immigrants.

Mediaite.com reports that Joseph Curtatone, the mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts, took the unflattering swipe at the leader and GOP presidential candidate, telling Boston Herald Radio: "I love listening to the Jindal, because I swear if you didn't know who he is, you swear it was Gomer Pyle on the phone. It's fantastic."

Curtatone, a Democrat, was referring to the 1960s TV sitcom "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." in which a simpleminded, backwoods southerner wreaks havoc in the Marine Corps.

Earlier, Jindal had told Boston Herald Radio that mayors of "sanctuary cities" who fail to report undocumented immigrants to authorities should be arrested.

"Should a mayor of a sanctuary city who ignores federal law be arrested? … Absolutely. I would hold them as an accomplice, make them criminally culpable," Jindal said.

"I'd also make them civilly liable so that families, victim's families could sue. Especially if the prosecutors aren't taking action or the mayor's not changing their ways, I'd allow the families to go to court to sue them civilly as well to recover damages."

"His proposal to arrest mayors?" Curtatone shot back. "Well, come and get me. Come and get me, I'm right here."

Responding to Curtatone, Jindal told Newsmax:

"The Mayor has set up a safe haven for illegal immigrants in his city and his laissez-faire attitude is flat out dangerous. If Mayor Curtatone is fine with illegal immigrants committing murder, rape, and burglaries in Somerville on his watch then he should pay the price for it and be criminally liable."

Curatone also taunted Jindal for his measly showing in the presidential polls, noting that he's failed to get over 2 percent.

"You say something absurd, you fearmonger, you play to the crowd," Curatone said.
"You try to create the crowd and the mob, and we're smarter than that."

Sanctuary cities have been under fire in the past month following the death of 32-year-old Kate Steinle. She was shot dead in San Francisco by an illegal Mexican immigrant who had been convicted of seven felonies and deported five times.
