John McCain: Taliban Attack Shows US Should Keep Afghan Force

By    |   Tuesday, 16 December 2014 08:28 PM EST

The deadly attack on a school by members of the Pakistani Taliban is evidence the United States should leave residual forces behind in Afghanistan, Sen. John McCain says.

"It's going to be a lot worse unless we leave a force behind rather than removing everybody from Afghanistan," McCain said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren"

"We'll see the Iraq movie again, and you'll see the Taliban inflicting more of these kinds of heinous, outrageous attacks."

The Afghan Taliban has condemned the Tuesday attack, which killed 126 people, mostly children.

Still, McCain said, he doesn't want to see a repeat in Afghanistan of what has happened in Iraq, where the Islamic State (ISIS) has taken over huge swaths of territory, killing and enslaving anyone who doesn't subscribe to its form of Islamic rule.
