Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will officially declare a bid for the Republican presidential nomination on June 4, the Dallas News reported.

Perry's wife, Anita, announced his intentions on Twitter. "@GovernorPerry & I have been discussing the future of this great country and how our family can play a role," she wrote and included an electronic invitation for people to attend the event in Dallas.

This will be Perry's second bid for the presidency, having run unsuccessfully four years ago. He enters an already crowded GOP field and opinion polls rank him far down the list of potential candidates. His polling average is just 2.4 percent, according to Real Clear Politics.

Perry has had an ambitious travel schedule in recent months, making trips to the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida with a number of campaign teams already assembled. He consults weekly with conservative experts on foreign and economic policy, the Dallas News said.

"In the 2016 contest, he will begin from behind, not only trying to push his message through the similar-sounding policies advanced by a large pack of candidates, but he also must erase memories of his previous debate flops and campaign stumbles," the Dallas News said.

Perry is expected to emphasize his 14 years of experience at the helm of Texas, and his record of job creation which was first in the nation.

Sources told the Dallas News that he is expected to begin campaigning in Iowa immediately after the announcement.
