White House press secretary Sean Spicer was guarded Tuesday when asked about news reports suggest he will soon step away from the presidential briefing room podium.
"I am right here," a smiling Spicer said.
Fox News reported this week Spicer is about to be promoted to a position that would oversee both the press and communications teams at the White House, a move that would leave a vacancy behind the mic.
"It's no secret, we've had vacancies, including our communications director," Spicer said. "We've been meeting with potential people . . . We are always looking for ways to seek a better job of articulating the president's message and his agenda. We'll continue to have those discussions internally.
"When we have an announcement of a personnel nature, we will let you know."
Spicer was asked a follow-up a short time later about whether he was happy with his White House role — a job that has gotten him mocked on "Saturday Night Live."
"We have a tremendous respect for the First Amendment, our ability and your ability to do your job, to report and seek out ideas," Spicer told the White House press corps. "We are going to work with you.
"I think the briefing is one aspect of what we do. We are here really early in the morning and late at night, available to all of your questions whether it is email or in person. [Press briefings are] one avenue to do that."
Spicer noted the administration has looked at data that suggests this White House has been more accommodating than past ones regarding requests to make President Donald Trump available for interviews.
