Researchers: AI Could Cause Nuclear-Level Catastrophe

By    |   Thursday, 13 April 2023 12:49 PM EDT

One-third of natural language processing researchers say artificial intelligence could cause a "nuclear-level catastrophe," according to a recent survey conducted by Stanford University.

An NLP scientist provides machines with the ability to understand human languages and is responsible for the technical creation and coding of NLP devices and applications.

Artificial intelligence burst to the forefront in the national and global conversation in recent months after the release of the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot, which helped spark a race among tech giants to unveil similar tools, while raising ethical and societal concerns about technology that can generate convincing prose or imagery that looks like it's the work of humans.

Italy last week temporarily blocked ChatGPT over data privacy concerns, and European Union lawmakers have been negotiating the passage of new rules to limit high-risk AI products across the 27-nation bloc.

The survey, conducted as part of Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered AI's annual AI index report, also notes that policymaker interest in AI is "on the rise" due to recent incidents.

"According to the AIAAIC database... the number of AI incidents and controversies has increased 26 times since 2012," reads the report. "Some notable incidents in 2022 included a deepfake video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy surrendering and US prisons using call-monitoring technology on their inmates."

"This growth is evidence, of both greater use of AI technologies and awareness of misuse possibilities."

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
