House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday the GOP should support openly gay Republican candidates,
Politico reported.
When asked at a press conference if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner replied, "I do."
He was responding to a Politico story about Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., pressuring the National Republican Congressional Committee to withhold money for the party's gay candidates.
Next year's midterm elections include two openly gay GOP candidates.
Richard Tisei from Massachusetts is running for Congress. Last year the NRCC gave Tisei $1.6 million,
according to CNN.
The second openly gay Republican candidate, former San Diego city councilman Carl DeMaio, is challenging Democratic Rep. Scott Peters.
Boehner also urged his colleagues to "be a little more sensitive" when running against women. "Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be," he said in response to a second Politico report that GOP men were being tutored in running against women candidates.
"When you look around the Congress, there are a lot more females in the Democrat caucus than there are in the Republican caucus," Boehner added.
