Former President Bill Clinton has vowed to quit the Clinton Foundation board of directors if his wife, Hillary Clinton, is elected president in November and he becomes the first spouse.
But the Clintons' daughter, Chelsea, who also is a board member, says she plans to stay, The Wall Street Journal reports.
That concerns some on both sides of the aisle, since, clearly, Hillary Clinton's daughter has access to her mother and what is at the least an appearance of impropriety would continue.
The Journal quoted a spokeswoman for Chelsea Clinton as saying she will stay on board because she "is committed to ensuring that those benefiting from the foundation’s work will be able to continue receiving that often life-changing help."
It is not clear, however, whether Chelsea Clinton will continue raising money for the foundation, according to the report.
The spokeswoman said Chelsea Clinton will stay on the board to "steward the implementation of changes" which include "new fundraising policies."
The foundation also has announced it will stop accepting foreign and corporate donations if Hillary Clinton wins, but the Clinton Health Access Initiative has not agreed to participate in the ban.
The foundation has long been under fire from conservatives who say it was used during Hillary Clinton's term as secretary of state to buy influence from foreign entities. An Associated Press report this week showed that more than half of Hillary Clinton's guests at the State Department were foundation donors.
"The Clinton Foundation has been way too inattentive to the appearance of impropriety," said Ray Madoff, Boston College Law School professor and director of the Forum on Philanthropy and the Public Good. "Chelsea clearly has access to her parents so the appearance of impropriety continues."
A Republican National Committee spokesman told the Journal it shows that that new policies previously announced are just "window dressing."
