Officials at Texas Christian University say a request by conservative radio personality Dana Loesch to have armed security provided for her book signing at the TCU Bookstore came too late. Loesch, who was not allowed to carry her own firearm on campus because it is a gun-free zone, canceled her Sunday appearance to promote her book "Hands Off My Gun,"
TCU 360 reported.
Loesch wrote on her website that she regretted having to cancel the appearance but that she has a policy of not turning up at events where she can't bring her gun and armed security is not provided.
Loesch, who hosts a program on Radio America and on The Blaze TV, cited an incident in which an irate listener came to one of her appearances and created a threatening scene when asked to leave. Events like that one made her cautious and she is "uncomfortable gambling" with her life, Loesch said according to the
Daily Caller.
"We only had like an hour's notice, so we just couldn't arrange" armed security through the campus police, said David George, a manager at the TCU Bookstore, according to TCU 360.
"It's expensive to pay someone else to hold a gun for you and I don't have a bank account like Michael Bloomberg, so if I'm prohibited from carrying I just ask for the host or venue to provide security.
"TCU wasn't able to accommodate, but unfortunately we only found out shortly before the event," Loesch said, according to the Caller.
"TCU is a great school and it's unfortunate that they're bound by Texas's idiotic gun laws," Loesch said, the Caller reported.
"Please accept my deepest apology," she wrote on her website.
TCU 360 reported that
Star-Telegram columnist Bud Kennedy expressed doubt in his Twitter feed. "The Supposed book signing by @DLoesch looks more like a staged event to promote campus carry. Waited until last minute."
