A coalition of 39 Hispanic organizations Saturday called on NBCUniversal to "follow Univision's lead" in severing ties with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over his remarks about illegal immigrants.
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda applauded Univision's "courageous action" this week ending its contract with the Miss Universe Organization over Trump's "repugnant comments regarding Mexican immigrants and, by extension, Mexican-Americans," t
he group said in a statement.
"Aspirants to the highest office in the land must not use a national electoral platform to spew venomous speech about Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans," said Hector Sanchez, chairman of the organization.
He also is the executive director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement. The coalition was founded in 1991.
"As a Mexican immigrant to this country, I can personally attest to the falsity of Donald Trump’s statements," Sanchez said.
Trump said in his June 16 campaign presidential announcement: "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."
The billionaire developer also proposed building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, to be financed by that country.
Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language cable channel, dropped the Miss USA Pageant over Trump's remarks. He owns the both Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.
Miss USA is to be held on July 12 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. NBC will carry the pageant. Univision will not.
The reigning Miss USA is Nia Sanchez of Nevada. A California native, she is Mexican.
Trump responded by banning all Univision personnel from his golf courses at Trump National Doral in South Florida.
In an interview to be aired Monday on a special edition of "Newsmax Prime," Trump declared that Univision will "pay a very big price" for ending the contract.
Trump has a five-year, $15 million contract with Univision.
He told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth that he loves Mexico and its people, but that Univision wants him to be quiet about immigration issues.
"If you look at how Mexico is ripping us off in trade, ripping us off at the border, I exposed it, and because of that Univision sent us a notice saying they can't even do it," he said. "I have a fantastic lawsuit.
"I'll sue them for a lot of money and that's fine, but they wanted me to be silent and I can't be silent."
