FBI Director James Comey will likely testify in front of the House Intelligence Committee on March 20 to answer questions about Russia's involvement in last year's U.S. presidential election.

A top FBI official all but confirmed to The Hill that Comey will be there, although it's not entirely clear if the hearing will be open or closed to the media.

"That's the plan. We're still working out the details and the ground rules with the committee, but we expect that we will be able to accommodate that date," Greg Brower, the assistant director for the law enforcement agency's Office of Congressional Affairs, told The Hill.

The panel is investigating what role, if any, Russia played in last year's election that saw Republican Donald Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. There are also reports that Trump may have had improper ties to Russia, which he denies.

Regardless, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that America's Cold War enemy did meddle with the election through computer hacks and fake news stories.

Brower told The Hill Comey's upcoming visit to Capitol Hill will center around the unclassified version of the intelligence report regarding Russia and the election.

"The March 20 hearing, as I understand it, is aimed at drilling down on the report — the public version that was distributed," he said. "It's likely that not much more than is in that report can be discussed in an open forum, but my sense from staff is that's the idea — they want to at least kick off their public hearings with a hearing about the report."

There have been other reports that the FBI may have electronically eavesdropped on Trump Tower during the presidential campaign. Rep. Adam Schiff, the top-ranked Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Friday the hearing will give Comey the opportunity to say whether or not Trump Tower was bugged.

"I think on March 20, we'll have the opportunity to put this to rest once and for all when we have the agency heads come in," Schiff told Politico.
