Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's decision on whether to run for House speaker will be known by Tuesday night, the man who now holds the position told Fox News Channel.
Outgoing Speaker John Boehner told Fox News Channel's
"Special Report" he doesn't know what Ryan's decision will be, but said, "I expect we'll know later on this evening what his answer is."
Not so fast, says Ryan's Communications Director Brendan Buck. After Boehner's appearance, Buck tweeted:
Establishment members of the GOP have been pushing an unwilling Ryan to run as someone who could bring all sides of the party together, and
Ryan was meeting with the conservative Freedom Caucus Tuesday. The group has endorsed Florida Rep. Daniel Webster, but his lack of broad support has made his election unlikely.
"I think Paul would be a great speaker," Boehner said. "I think he has the skills to do the job and I think he also has the credentials to reach out to traditional conservative organizations to help bridge the gap that we have in the House today."
If Ryan does get in, he will have the support of members and will have enough votes to win, Boehner said.
No date has been set for a vote yet, Boehner said, but he added he still expects to resign his position by the end of October.
