President Donald Trump is reportedly close to selecting economist Kevin Hassett to chair the White House Council of Economic Advisers, according to Politico.
Hassett, a conservative and scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, would pair with Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, to craft the Trump administration's proposal on corporate tax reform.
Although the previous CEA chair, Jason Furman, was a member of former President Barack Obama's Cabinet, Hassett would not join Trump's Cabinet if nominated and confirmed.
Furman tweeted his praise for Hassett on Friday:
One of Politico's sources claims Hassett's nomination will be announced soon, while another said he's already begun interviewing for staff, and a third claiming there are no other potential nominees.
CNBC reported in January that Hassett was "on a long short list" for the role.
Hassett gained notoriety following his co-writing the 1999 book Dow 36,000, which predicted stock market gains just before the burst of the dot-com bubble. His profile rose more recently after he co-authored a study on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady during the 2015 "deflategate" scandal.
