The North Korean regime poses a "grave threat" to the U.S. and the world, according to Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont.
"This bully, Kim Jong Un, unfortunately, understands only one thing, and that is strength and force," Daines said Tuesday on Fox News' "America’s Newsroom."
"It's very clear being on the ground there in South Korea and going up to the DMZ and standing on the border between North and South Korea of the grave threat that the North Korean regime presents to the United States as well as to the entire world," Daines said.
The senator said he saw the importance of the U.S. and its allies being unified against the regime.
"There are 25 million people living in Seoul," Daines told Fox News. "That's just 35 miles from North Korea's border. . . . North Koreans can launch artillery within seconds and hit Seoul. We have 300,000 Americans on the ground there, 30,000 that serve in the military. The North Koreans have an extensive chemical weapons stockpile. So, this is a very complicated situation.
"That's why it's so important we put all the economic pressure and diplomatic pressure we can on North Korea for a peaceful resolution and denuclearization of the peninsula," Daines added.
China must also be a part of sanctioning the Chinese, he said.
"They play a very important role in additional sanctions; the banking sanctions, stopping oil imports to North Korea," Daines told Fox News. "Those are some important levers that we can throw there at the moment."
Daines praised the generals in the U.S. military, calling them "unwavering in their resolve, making sure the North Koreans understand that all options are on the table and we are not going to back down."
The U.S. has "four or five" ways to resolve the crisis with North Korea, according to National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.
