Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg reacted to the Trump administration's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program by calling it a "sad day" for the United States.
Zuckerberg posted a lengthy statement after Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday morning the DACA program, which allows people who illegally came to the U.S. as children with their parents to stay under certain conditions, will be rescinded in six months.
"This is a sad day for our country. The decision to end DACA is not just wrong," Zuckerberg wrote. "It is particularly cruel to offer young people the American Dream, encourage them to come out of the shadows and trust our government, and then punish them for it."
Zuckerberg called on lawmakers to work on legislation that would protect the roughly 800,000 people who have benefited from the program, and the American public to lobby their members of Congress to take action.
"If you live in the U.S., call your members of Congress and tell them to do the right thing," Zuckerberg wrote. "We have always been a nation of immigrants, and immigrants have always made our nation stronger."
