Discover America's 'True National Treasure' in Kirk Cameron's 'Monumental'

The inspiring movie "Monumental," starring former "Growing Pains" star Kirk Cameron, is airing Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on Newsmax TV — available on DirecTV Ch. 349, Dish Network Ch. 223 and Verizon Fios Ch. 115.

"Monumental: In Search of America's National Treasure" takes Cameron across Europe and the United States as he seeks to discover the people, places, and principles that made America the freest, most prosperous and generous nation the world has ever known.

It is the story of America's beginnings. The documentary, of which Cameron is also co-producer,  follows the father of six as he seeks to discover America's true "national treasure," and traces America's founding back to the Pilgrims.

"Monumental," released in 2012, has been heralded as "inspiring," "beautifully executed," "powerful," and "meant to teach."

The movie illustrates how the small band of religious outcasts who founded this country hit upon a formula for success that went far beyond what they could have imagined.

"How else can you explain the fact that they established a nation that has become the best example of civil, economic, and religious liberty the world has ever known?" the producers of "Monumental" state.

"What formula did they discover? What motivated them to come here in the first place? More importantly, how can we apply these same foundational truths today?"

In an interview with Christianity Today, Cameron said: "I approached this film not as an actor or a politician, but just as a dad with six children.

"The world they're growing up in is rapidly changing, and it's heading in a direction that is not good. Financially, we're $16 trillion in debt.

"Morally, spiritually, we're spiraling downward. We're in the vortex and we're about to get flushed down the drain. I turn on the news and say, 'What can we do about this?'

"Everyone's playing the blame game. The church blames the media for all of the wickedness that gets pumped into our homes, and the media blames the church and religion for all of the wars. I say, wait a second. Maybe we've simply forgotten what made this country the freest, richest, most prosperous nation in the world."
