Newsmax magazine has been awarded top honors by the Florida Magazine Association, which recognizes industry publications for outstanding achievement.

On Aug. 2, at its Annual Publishing Conference & Exposition this year in Orlando, Fla., the association bestowed four Charlie Awards – its highest honor — to Newsmax.

Newsmax won the highly coveted Charlie Award in each of the following categories: Best Editorial/Commentary/Opinion for Christopher Ruddy's "The Ed Koch I Knew — a Remembrance" in the March 2013 issue; Best Feature for Ben Stein's "Recalling Nixon: A Great Peacemaker's Sad End" in the May 2012 issue; Best Cover for May 2012's "Obama Gothic," (see above) depicting President Obama and first lady Michelle in an "American Gothic" pose; and Best Photo Illustration for the "Their Long Road Home" article in the December 2012 issue, showing a wheelchair-bound veteran casting the shadow of a standing soldier saluting the flag.

Newsmax also won Silver Awards in the Best Feature category for "We Can Be Great Again," co-written by Jeb Bush, and Best Department Design for the Very Best section; plus Bronze Awards in the Best In-Depth Reporting category for Judith Miller's "Syrian Rebels Struggle with Infighting and Inexperience," and Best Department Design for the Travel section.

FMA President Kevin Kaminski told Newsmax: "The Florida Magazine Association is proud to serve such a diverse cross-section of talent.

"Editorial, art, and digital teams throughout our state continue to raise the publishing bar in Florida — from small trade magazines to prominent media organizations like Newsmax.

"Newsmax may be national in scope, but its commitment to the state's publishing community is evident in its support of — and involvement in — our organization. FMA couldn't be more appreciative."

Newsmax is the monthly print and digital magazine published by Newsmax Media, headquartered in West Palm Beach, Fla. Newsmax magazine began publishing in 2001 and has remained one of the country’s fast-growing publications with approximately 1 million monthly readers. Each month, more than 12 million Americans visit Newsmax.com and its affiliated websites online.

Ken Chandler, editor-in-chief of Newsmax magazine, said: "These awards are a great tribute to our writers and entire staff. Four Charlies reflect the quality that we strive for with each issue of Newsmax. We are honored."

In addition to in-depth news coverage and cutting-edge opinion from writers like Ben Stein, Judith Miller, and Doug Schoen, the magazine offers practical advice on health, finance, and lifestyle for an upscale audience of heartland Americans.

"We’re thrilled to again be recognized by the prestigious Florida Magazine Association," said Christopher Ruddy, president and CEO of Newsmax. "We are extremely proud and honored to receive a single Charlie, let alone four."

In 2011, Newsmax magazine also received a coveted award from Folio magazine — its Gold Eddie for the January 2010 cover story "Obama Hates Fox News: The President Goes Fox Hunting."

The Florida Magazine Association is the largest state magazine association in the nation, representing more than 200 magazines and 25 suppliers of publishing products and services. For more than five decades, the FMA has provided Florida’s magazines with a vital forum for information-sharing and updates on trends to assist and direct their growth.

Winning entries were evaluated by seasoned journalism professionals from across the country who specialize in all facets of magazine publishing.

The Charlie Awards are named after Charles G. "Charlie" Wellborn Jr., a professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida and an active member of the FMA. He retired in 1987 and the FMA honored him by renaming its top award the "Charlie."
