Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul spent Tuesday broadcasting a livestream of his entire day in hopes of bringing some attention to his flagging campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
He read mean tweets about himself and answered questions about his campaign his staff had culled from Google.
One of the top googled questions was whether Paul is still running for president.
"I don't know, I wouldn't be doing this dumbass livestreaming if I weren't," Paul answered. "Yes, I'm running for president. Get over it."
He might have immediately regretted that answer, since moments later he said, ""We can't edit this, right?"
"This is probably not exactly the response that most campaign consultants would suggest in response to a question like this," Peter Suderman wrote on
Reason.com. But the comment did generate interest, Suderman noted, with the word "dumbass" briefly trending on Twitter in the Washington, D.C., area.
Paul's campaign is cashing in on the talk,
selling a T-shirt reading, "I watched Rand Paul's livestream and all I got was this dumbass teeshirt."
