Report: Russian Spy Ship Cruising Off US East Coast

Report: Russian Spy Ship Cruising Off US East Coast

By    |   Tuesday, 14 February 2017 12:08 PM EST

A Russian spy ship is reportedly less than 100 miles off the east coast of the United States.

According to Fox News, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov was 70 miles off Delaware Tuesday morning. That puts it in international waters, since the U.S. border extends just 12 nautical miles offshore.

The ship, according to the report, was heading north at 10 knots.

"It's not a huge concern, but we are keeping our eyes on it," a U.S. official told the network.

The ship and its array of electronic equipment can intercept communications and other signals. It can also detect sonar activity from U.S. Naval vessels.

Fox reports there are four ships from the U.S. Navy conducting training operations off the coast of Norfolk, Va., but neither has diverted to shadow the Russian ship. There are, however, several air bases on the east coast that can launch airborne surveillance operations of the Viktor Leonov.

America's relationship with Russia has been a hot topic of conversation in recent months after U.S. officials concluded Russia interfered with the presidential election.

More recently, President Donald Trump's national security adviser Michael Flynn reportedly spoke with the Russia ambassador to the U.S. before Trump was sworn in.

Those conversations may have touched on sanctions placed on Russia because of its election meddling, and Flynn resigned from his post Monday night.
