House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is out of the intensive care unit again after surgery for an infection, NBC Washington reported.

Scalise, the third ranking Republican in the House, was shot in the hip and badly wounded in last month's shooting at an Alexandria baseball field and has undergone several surgeries to repair damage to internal organs and bones.

Scalise went in for surgery last week after the infection scare.

Scalise was close to death upon arrival at the hospital after the June 14 shooting.
