More than 40 U.S. territories and states have submitted hundreds of transportation infrastructure project requests to the federal government for the Trump administration to consider.
According to The Hill, President Donald Trump's team has received information about 300-plus projects. More states are expected to send additional ideas, all of which will be considered for Trump's infrastructure bill that he touted on the campaign trail.
The National Governors Association (NGA) was tasked with collecting the list of projects in December.
"If [Trump] moves fast on infrastructure, we want to get some ideas of what are good projects that states could move quickly on," NGA executive director Scott Pattison told the Hill. "A lot of the details still have to be worked out, but it's a great starting point."
Bloomberg first reported on the infrastructure project requests Monday morning. The outlet reported that Trump has proposed spending anywhere from $550 billion to $1 trillion on repairing the nation's infrastructure, which includes roads, bridges, tunnels. and even airports.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation, according to Bloomberg, submitted information about seven shovel-ready projects. The state's transportation commissioner John Schroer, who also serves as vice president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, said he would like Trump to keep the power to ultimately decide which projects are funded at the state level, rather than the federal government.
"I don't see any way that, federally, they can define projects for a state," Schroer said. "The federal government can't figure out what a state needs."
Pattison told the Hill the projects should be legitimate infrastructure improvements, not pork-barrel spending.
"You don't want it to be pork spending," Pattison said. "I think you make sure that whatever ultimate proposal becomes law, that they try to guard against that. One of the ways to do that is to be able to point out they were already [identified] by the state as a high priority for years."
