Donald Trump's war with Megyn Kelly took off again on Thursday.
The Republican presidential front-runner slammed a segment of
"The Kelly File" in which the Fox News host featured guests who argued that Trump and Ben Carson were threatening to boycott the third GOP debate later this month because neither did well in the first two outings. Here's what the front-runner said on Twitter: Kelly's segment featured Chris Stirewalt, Fox News' digital politics editor, and Mark Thiessen, a contributor and chief speech writer to former President George W. Bush. Both referenced the three-hour debate last month hosted by CNN.
Stirewalt said that Trump "was kind of sleepy — and he was a little lower energy" by the end of the contest. "If you're Trump or you're Carson, you don't want the debates."
He added. "You don't want the debates. You don't need the debates, if you're at the top of the polls. You're not great at debates, maybe you're happy if you have to object."
Thiessen said that Trump and Carson "have had pretty bad debates in the first two outings, so it's no surprise that they don’t want to.
"He's actually saying, in other words, that there's too much time to actually debate, so he doesn't want to debate," he added. "I would be much more impressed if his objection was: 'Look it's time to winnow the field a bit. We have too many candidates. There's not enough time for us to have a good exchange.'
"That would be a legitimate objection, but he doesn't want to have more time for an exchange — because he doesn't want to have more time to have Carly Fiorina filet him on foreign policy the way she did in the last debate," Thiessen said.
Kelly and Trump have been at war since the first Republican debate, when he accused her of deliberately targeting him by asking questions about how he viewed women using outrageous quotes -- some from his "Apprentice" show. The next morning he made references to her menstrual cycle. Fox chief Roger Ailes called Trump at the time to smooth things over.
A few weeks later, Trump boycotted the network altogether, accusing them of biased reporting. After another meeting with Ailes he returned as a guest to the network's various shows.
