Do not expect Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to keep his mouth shut now that President Donald Trump is tapping his wife as an ambassador-at-large, veteran conservative pundit Patrick J. Buchanan told Newsmax TV.
"No, are you serious?" Buchanan, author of the new book, "Nixon's White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever," told host Steve Malzberg on Tuesday.
The Daily Beast reported Cindy McCain has accepted a post from President Donald Trump as a Washington, D.C.-based ambassador-at-large, focusing on anti-human trafficking efforts, refugees, and humanitarian-aid matters.
McCain is a six-term Arizona Republican who has been critical of Trump. When recently asked by The Guardian if America's standing on the world was better under former President Barack Obama, McCain said: "As far as American leadership is concerned, yes."
Buchanan, a senior adviser to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan and two-time GOP presidential candidate, said he believes McCain will not pull punches with his wife working for Trump.
"Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife, is a lovely lady, and I'm sure she's qualified," McCain said. "I'm unaware what her involvement is, but I'm sure she's involved in good works and that she's qualified.
"But is this going to influence John McCain? My experience with John McCain is that he's a fairly independent fellow."
