The steady attacks on Donald Trump by the Republican establishment over his comments about the federal judge proves that the GOP is "a self-destructive party," Heritage Foundation senior fellow Stephen Moore told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"I'm not going to ever defend what Donald Trump said about that judge," Moore, who also is an economics contributor to FreedomWorks, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview. "I feel very strong about this."

"Hillary [Clinton] said some pretty dumb things, too. She said she was going to put every coal miner out of business. So they both said stupid things.

"When Hillary says dumb things, do the Democrats run around CNN and say: 'She should retract that statement. She doesn't care about the people.'

"Why are Republicans doing this? Why is [House Speaker] Paul Ryan doing it? Why is my friend Newt Gingrich doing it?

"Why not change the subject?" Moore asked. "This is why we lose and they win. They're smarter than we are."
