Catholic League: HBO Should Cancel Bill Maher's Show

By    |   Tuesday, 26 November 2013 05:09 PM EST

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is spearheading a campaign to get comedian Bill Maher's HBO show canceled because of its history of "unbelievable" anti-Catholic statements.

"I wrote to over 400 bishops in the United States telling them where they can get a copy online of the 54 vicious anti-Catholic statements painting the pope and priests and cardinals as child rapists that Maher has said since 1998," William Donohue told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"He does it every single Friday night. There's no other demographic group in this country that you can get away with this kind of impunity, and enough is enough."

"Once you get all of the cardinals, bishops writing to Jeff Bewkes [CEO of cable giant Time Warner] and the board of directors . . . Hopefully, they'll just cancel the show. You cannot reform Bill Maher. He's an inveterate bigot."

Donohue is particularly incensed by an appearance last week on "Real Time with Bill Maher" by gay-rights advocate Dan Savage, who went on a foul-mouthed rant about priests, children and rape.

"What happened last Friday was just unbelievable," Donohue said.

"They ought to just simply dump the whole show . . . The time has come to let this guy go."
