Cain Officially Endorses Romney

One-time presidential front-runner Herman Cain endorsed Mitt Romney for president on Wednesday, saying a unified Republican front is critical to winning the White House this fall.

“One way to achieve this goal of a ‘more perfect union’ is by getting Barack Obama out of the White House,” Cain said outside the National Republican Club in Washington. “Throwing our support and energy behind Mitt Romney is a big step in accomplishing this mission.”

Cain, 66, suspended his presidential campaign in December amid allegations of sexual impropriety. Nearly two months later he endorsed former House speaker Newt Gingrich for the GOP nomination.

In a Newsmax.TV interview in January, Cain called Gingrich “one of the most knowledgeable candidates in the hunt for the presidency."

But with Gingrich out of the race, Cain is now backing Romney, who is almost certain to be the Republican presidential nominee. “I’ve met with him privately — and now I’m telling everyone publicly, if Mitt Romney wasn’t your favorite candidate for the Republican nomination, get over it.”

The Atlanta businessman added: “We need unity to take back the White House, the Senate, and keep control of the House of Representatives.” Cain said he has been speaking throughout the country since the beginning of the year and his message of unity has resonated among various constituents.

In a private meeting with the former Massachusetts governor late last month, Cain said he encouraged Romney to embrace the wide diversity of conservative voices. Not everyone in the Republican camp will agree on everything, Cain said, but Romney gets the big things right – especially recognizing that federal policies are the biggest impediment to American prosperity.

“I now call on the millions of Americans who want to end disastrous government policies that compromise our freedom and prosperity to do the same and help Gov. Romney win in November,” Cain said.
