President-elect Donald Trump dined with Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach over the weekend for what he described as a "lovely dinner with a wonderful man," The Washington Post reported.

The meeting was surprising considering Trump's verbal jabs at Mexico over the course of his presidential campaign.

According to Forbes, Slim's fortune was hit hard by Trump's election, with his net worth sinking by nearly $5 billion just four days after the election. Trump also claimed Slim was working with The New York Times to help the Clinton campaign smear him.

But Larry Rubin, president of the Republican party chapter in Mexico, told the Post that Trump wants to work closely with the Mexican business community.

"What President-elect Trump wants to do in coming closer to the Mexican business community has an impact not only nationally, but regionally with Latin America and opens the doors for good business relations overall," Rubin said. "The closer that the administration is to businesses and governments in Mexico and in the region, the better for the U.S."

Trump returned to Twitter following the Mar-a-Lago meeting to sound a more conciliatory note:
