Speculation abounds about Sen. Elizabeth Warren becoming Hillary Clinton's running mate now that Democrats know they almost assuredly will be up against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump in the November elections,
The Hill reports.
The pros and cons of the discussion reflect in many ways the unusual circumstances of this very non-conventional and unpredictable presidential race.
Those in favor of Warren joining the ticket say that her super liberalism will soften the disappointment the progressive branch of the party will experience when Bernie Sanders fails to get the nomination.
In fact,
Five Thirty Eight conducted a study that found Warren, if she ran, would be the most liberal candidate on a national ticket since George McGovern in 1972.
Boosters also say a two-women team would energize the leftist base and help accentuate what many consider to be Trump's misogyny.
Warren is also known for not being afraid to back down from a fight and many believe her feistiness would be helpful in what is expected to be a rough and tumble presidential campaign.
But
Politico spoke to a wide range of Democrats who blasted the idea, pointing out that Warren as the vice presidential candidate might very well buoy Clinton's left flank, but for just the same reason alienate large swaths of the non-committed center nationwide who are wary of Trump but are not ready to back such radical change.
A more centrist and conventional choice for a running mate would, in that view, be a safer way to not unnecessarily push away those who are considering voting for Clinton.
It is the Trump factor, of course, that is helping to throw much of that conventional wisdom out of the window.
So far, at least, he does not appear concerned by Warren's possible candidacy and has engaged in a series of Twitter battles with her.
After she attacked him again by calling him "narcissistic and racist," Trump fired back, labeling her Clinton's flunky and adding that "goofy Elizabeth Warren is weak and ineffective … Does nothing. All talk, no action."
