Rep. Gary Peters of Michigan is facing a claim of possible dishonesty in his military record,
Breitbart.com reported, as the Democrat continues to break open a lead in the race for a Senate seat against Republican nominee Terri Lynn Land.
Questions were raised after an investigation by Breitbart
over whether Peters misrepresented his marksmanship rating on his campaign website, a skill Breitbart reports was also shared to the media by the congressman's spokeswoman.
The issue was over the use of the words "sharpshooter" or "expert."
"Peters and (spokeswoman Haley) Morris have both told local media that Peters was an 'expert marksman' qualification in both rifle and pistol, and Peters claims on his campaign website that he was 'an expert pistol and rifle marksman,'" Breitbart noted in a story published Monday, citing several Michigan media references to his shooting capabilities.
The
Daily Beast, in reporting about the matter, described the reports of alleged misrepresentation as the "swift-boating" of Peters, who served in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Peters, who has represented Michigan's 14th District since 2009, is leading Land, a former secretary of state, by a widening margin, up 42-33 percent in an EPIC-MRA poll released two weeks ago,
The Washington Times reported. The nine-point spread is an increase of three points from previous polling of the race taken in August.
A
RealClearPolitics polling average from Sept. 19 to Oct. 2 found Peters ahead in the race by nine points as well.
