House Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Adam Schiff said Tuesday "enough is enough" in response to news reports President Donald Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to stop the agency's probe of Michael Flynn in February.
"With allegations that the president urged him to essentially drop the investigation of Michael Flynn, enough is enough," the California Democrat told reporters on Capitol Hill. "Congress really needs to get to the bottom of this."
The New York Times reported Comey wrote a memo after a Feb. 14 meeting with Trump in which the president asked him to drop the FBI probe into Flynn – who had resigned the day before as national security adviser.
Trump fired Flynn Trump over questions about his disclosures about his Russian ties to Vice President Mike Pence.
Schiff said the report was "yet another disturbing allegation that president may have engaged in some obstruction of the investigation."
"There's been enough alleged publicly to want to bring the director back to testify, ideally in an open session before our committee or the Senate Judiciary Committee," he said. "But he should come back to Congress and share what he knows in terms of the president's conversations with him on anyone connected to the Russia investigation.
"We ought to ask for the notes that were taken contemporaneously or shortly after those meetings – and, of course, if there are any tapes as the president alleged, those should also be obtained by Congress," Schiff said.
"We should subpoena them, but hopefully we can obtain any of these materials voluntarily."
